FAIL, REFLECT, ACT & SUCCEED
Clara : a busy executive
Situation
Three years ago, in Paris, I met a CEO, Clara, who felt that her working days were really too long. At the head of 150 people, and at her desk by 7 am, she runs and manages operations and does not return home until after 10 pm.
Failed
Operational management takes up all her time; and despite her efforts and her dynamism, she is unable to satisfy fully her shareholders, who regret that she does not develop further expansion of the company. Where would she find time? Already she can no longer spare time for herself: exit the gym, exit the holidays. She is the manager of her company… and her company runs her life.
Request
“How can I manage the operational and the development of the company while having a better balance with my personal life?”
Reflection
I coached her in her reflection and action.
Very quickly, she decides to divide by four the length of her visits to her outlets. Then, she reduces the incessant solicitations of her staff, encouraging them to show autonomy. Free time starts to emerge and Clara accelerates her efforts on investment projects: new outlets, new products and exploring diverse means of financing and then she moves her head office to reduce commuting time. Finally, she prepares meetings with her shareholders.
Success
Today, Clara manages and develops her business. Her shareholders are reassured and have raised the possibility of entrusting her to other parts of the group. On a personal level, she goes to the gym and managed to take vacations. Since then, she has found a partner to share her life.
Is this a positive side effect of the coaching results? Who knows. In any case, Clara has found a work-life balance that suited her.
What can we learn from this experience? Some executives need to be coached to achieve results quickly for their company and for themselves.

Elon : the loss of meaning
Situation
Elon works in London where he is a successful and ambitious leader. He has recently been promoted to the head of a team of 40 employees. It is all sunshine and blue sky for Elon!
Failed
In his new role, Elon’s results are measured through customer satisfaction surveys… And very quickly, the numbers begin to deteriorate; customers complain. His superior urges him to act.
Request
“What to do? How to do more? How can we do better? “
Reflection / Action
I coached him to help him reflect and take action.
Does he know what he should do? Nothing is obvious at first. So, of course, Elon thinks of his list of objectives; there are seventy, all of which represent all the priorities imposed by his superiors, so many that he is lost. So, Elon groups them together, so much so that they converge to seven major objectives.
In doing so he perceives his two main objectives are “quality of service” and “compliance”. He also realizes that he has not been devoting sufficient time and resources to these two goals; so he immediately reassigns the priorities of ten of his team members.
Success
Quickly, and almost automatically, the results recover. It now seems simple to him. Yet, that’s not what he was thinking at the very beginning.
What can we learn from this experience? Some leaders need to be coached to gain clarity and take decisive action.
That’s why, if you find yourself in Elon’s situation, do not wait any longer; contact me!
Elizabeth: say NO
Situation
Elizabeth is Brazilian; she lives in Rio and is an expert in her technical field. This means that she demonstrates a solid technical knowledge and a recognized experience.
Failed
She is so appreciated that everyone is soliciting her even for small tasks. She is so proud to show that she knows how to do that she always answers YES to everyone. However, she no longer has the time to concentrate on her main goals. She becomes stressed and you can tell because her hands shake and her voice starts to tremble.
Request
“How can I not be so stressed? All these people who harass me, they are my clients! How can I consider them differently? “
Reflection
I coached her in her reflection and action.
Action
Elizabeth begins by making the inventory of all those who have approached her for her expertise. She sets up a system to analyse and validate the requests. Straightforward requests will have to be dealt with by the call center, the support website, etc. and she informs her colleagues that she will deal only with complex high-impact problems.
Success
Elizabeth has managed to set limits against the requests she receives. She has lowered her level of stress. Her hands no longer tremble, and her voice, once stuttering has become firm.
What can we learn from this experience? Some experts following professional ethics tend to always say YES. Saying YES to something means NO to something else and conversely saying NO to something means YES to something else. Through coaching, people develop their ability to decide and choose.
Colin: The perfectionist
Situation
Colin is the owner of his company. He knows everything in his field inside out. No one does as well as he does. He is proud to provide an extremely high-quality service.
Failed
However, his company’s revenue has dropped recently. Colin called on customers who were no longer placing orders with him. Some customers for whom on-time fulfillment was a key requirement, indicated that delays from his company had become intolerable.
Request
“How do we keep the deadlines? How to keep my clients? “
Reflection
I coached him in his reflection and his action.
Action
Looking back, Colin understands that he has placed his own expectations on quality at a very high level. This level not only has imposed additional delays but also has discouraged some members of his team from contributing as well as they would wish.
Colin decides to take risks, to delegate and to tolerate some additional errors that can be corrected down the line to improve delivery times and recover customer satisfaction.
Success
Colin has reunited his team and they feel better able to contribute again. They help tackle the work volume with greater speed and efficiency while he takes care of quality and remedial processes. He has calibrated his expectations on quality so that they are within the expectations of his customers. Deadlines are improved and he himself is relieved to feel helped effectively.
What can we learn from this experience? Some leaders impose strong constraints based on unsubstantiated beliefs. By being coached, they develop a capacity to see beyond the constraints they have placed upon themselves.
That’s why, if you find yourself in Colin’s situation, do not wait any longer; contact me!
Bianca: poorly allocated resources …
Situation
Bianca lives in Brussels. She loves everything in her life: her job as manager, her team, her husband and step-daughter, her city, walking in the nearby countryside.
Failed
However, she feels she is at the centre of everyone’s requests. She is exhausted and overwhelmed and is afraid she is losing her bearings. She devotes herself 100% to everyone only to find that people are complaining that she is never available.
Request
“I do not have time! I’m overwhelmed … I do not have a minute left to me! How can I regain control? “
Reflection
I coached her to help her with reflection and action.
Action
Bianca lists of all her goals in the five areas of life which are: “herself”, “her marriage”, “family and friends”, “work” and “social life”. She agrees to grant each goal a defined amount of time.
Success
In her hectic life, everyone has now an allocated place in Bianca’s life. She is 100% present for everyone at a given time. She feels serene and understood.
What can we learn from this experience? Some people feel they sacrifice themselves for everyone while still not being recognized for their efforts. By being coached, they develop their capacity to better invest time and energy.
That’s why, if you find yourself in Bianca’s situation, don’t wait: contact me today!
Team Conflict
Situation
In Toulouse, two teams are collaborating, one of which is subcontracted to the other. Over time their missions and organizations evolve.
Failed
Gradually, tensions appear with innocuous conflicts and then more difficult exchanges. Some team members make decisions without reference to the other or the chain of management. Managers become nervous.
Request
“This situation cannot continue. How to smooth dissent and discord within the teams? “
Reflection
I have coached them in their reflection and action.
Action
Through group discussions, some employees express their fear about the sustainability of the activity and their need for more clarity. Managers decide to communicate more transparently and to ensure a more effective presence.
Success
The calm returns. The reassured teams are again concentrating on their tasks and their results.
What can we learn from this experience? Poor circulation of information generates unnecessary worries and tensions. By being coached, they develop their capacity to cooperate.
That’s why, if you find yourself in the experience of these two teams, do not wait any more: contact me!
Hello my name is laurent
And I will be your coach today
One challenge a year
I set myself a challenge each year. Challenges include helping a charitable organization (SDF – Homeless, handicapped children), going on a mission to China, piloting a local radio show, developing an international patent, appearing on national TV News show, performing kitesurfing jumps two meters high, delivering conferences, creating a company, … And it is not finished!
Pursue several objectives
I tried to get my engineering degree and a degree in economics the same year. I did not get the economics degree because I did not dedicate enough time and attention. The following year, I was pursuing three objectives: performing my military service duty, obtaining a Master of Science in Applied Computing and having a seasonal job in a ski resort. This time I could combine everything.
Conflict in a suburban train
One Friday evening, on my way home in a suburban train, a somewhat agitated stranger sits in front of me. He suddenly yelled at me, “You’re a F… bureaucrat, you bastard!” “. Calmly, I asked: “Are you angry with bureaucrats? Did you have an unfortunate experience with administration? To which he replied: “F… you!” “. Some 10 minutes later and after some conflict management techniques, Gérard, my traveling companion, was quieter, his hand on my shoulder, telling me the story of his life!
Principles and values
Freedom, Excellence and Family: these are the three values that spark my enthusiasm for life. Autonomy, Trust and Performance: these are the three principles that inspire me in the education of my children.
Sleep and Energy
I have learned to fall asleep on command, everywhere, anytime, for varying durations. Sleeping represents 30% of our time on earth. I fall asleep in 5 seconds. I sleep well. The important thing for me is to recover energy.
Pool and podcast
I swim thirty minutes regularly while listening to podcasts through a waterproof mp3 player. I combine two pleasures at the same time.
